Welcome to the 3rd International Summer School of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu! “The Knowledge-based Green Economy: challenges, constraints and opportunities” 14th – 25th July, 2014. The green economy transformation – the conversion of traditional economies into modern, ecologically and socially sound economies – will be the crucial paradigm of the next few decades.
The globalisation process which has been prevalent for the last decades has challenged and partly incapacitated economic theories and practices.
National and local regulations and regulatory have been partly rendered ineffective and insufficient by businesses who moved towards the least regulated areas with weak institutional support, which allowed them to exploit existing natural resources and the missing societal regulations for protecting the work force. As natural catastrophes and scarcer resources are gaining the headlines and have a deep impact on economies, it is of utmost importance to educate students and citizens on the principles of Green Economy, under who’s premises the results are improved human well-being and social equity , while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.
The successful transformation to a green economy is a task for the whole of society. It involves far more than the utilisation of green technologies or breaking the link between resource consumption and economic growth. Changing to a sustainable global economy will concern and require dedicated effort by every sector of the state, the economy and society. Considering the economic, ecological or social framework in isolation will not be viable in the long run.
If we are to come up with integrated solution strategies, we must identify and take into account the interplay between various fields of action far more than we have in the past. One prerequisite is that actors from every social sphere adopt a more comprehensive perspective, and accept long-term responsibility.
